Aromatherapy Massage

What is it?

Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils derived from plants with Swedish and other massage techniques to relax the body, enabling the oils to have their full effect on body and mind. It is a form of complementary therapy designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom or disease by assisting the body's natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself.

Essential oils are readily absorbed through the skin, and whilst breathing. Their therapeutic constituents enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body where they can deliver their beneficial healing powers.

What are the benefits?

Aromatherapy massage is known to boost wellbeing, It is ideal for relieving muscle- and joint-related conditions or for physical or mental stress, and as a complementary treatment for:

  • Headache

  • Insomnia

  • Digestive disorders

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

  • Back pain

What’s the evidence?

Research is continually re-affirming the efficacy of aromatherapy treatments, and the results are now very hard to dismiss. For example, a recent study in the USA has confirmed the long held belief of aroma therapists that Jasmine is a powerful relaxant and an effective aid to restful sleep. The researchers explained that the purpose of the study was specifically to investigate some of the beliefs behind aromatherapy.

Whilst there is no scientific evidence to prove that aromatherapy can cure or prevent any type of disease, some studies suggest it might help as a complementary therapy for people with cancer.

Aromatherapy massage appears to reduce the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps, a 2015 study from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests. Massage with aromatherapy may also ease menopausal symptoms. In a study published in Menopause, researchers found that both massage and aromatherapy massage were effective in reducing menopausal symptoms, with aromatherapy massage being more effective than massage only

What to expect

I will ask you general questions about your health, lifestyle and medical history. I might ask you to speak with your GP before treatment if there have any concerns.

Having discussed your needs I will select the oils which I feel will help you manage your symptoms the most. I am happy for you to help in this selection. Then, I will dilute the essential oils with another oil and gently massage this into your skin. During the massage I might play some relaxing music. The subtle aroma of the essential oils fills the air around you during the massage.

Tell me if you feel uncomfortable at any time or want me to stop if you feel uncomfortable. Most people say that an aromatherapy massage is relaxing and soothing.
