Hot Stones Massage

What’s is it?

Hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy. It uses heated stones to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body. The direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to their deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone protocols with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience.

What are the benefits?

Hot stone massage therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism. Each session promotes deeper muscle relaxation. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body. The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation.

Hot stone treatments may:

  • Reduces chronic stress and tension

What to expect

You will be covered by a sheet or blanket before and during certain stages of the massage session. I will move the sheet from time to time as I work on parts of your body..

During the treatment, I will place smooth, flat, heated stones on specific parts of your body such as along your spine, on your stomach, chest, face, palms or feet and toes. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. I may hold heated stones as they massage your body using a variety of massage techniques, working over kinks in your muscles. You are unlikely to feel the intensity, since your muscles will be relaxed by the heat of the stones.

The stones are smooth and they are gently heated so there's no need to worry about them burning your skin. They are strategically placed along your back to target specific areas and provide deep and thorough pain relief.

What’s the evidence?

Hot stone massage may relieve painful conditions such as fibromyalgia, a condition that causes widespread, chronic pain. A 2002 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology, showed that people with fibromyalgia who received a 30-minute massage slept longer, had fewer trigger points, and had decreased levels of substance P (a substance involved in transmitting pain signals) than people with the condition who received relaxation therapy. More research is needed, however, before massage becomes a standard fibromyalgia treatment.

A 2013 study published in Contemporary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that people with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from a moderate-pressure massage, such as hot stone massage. Participants in the study experienced less pain, greater grip strength, and a greater range of motion after one month of massage therapy.

"Well that was something special. 'Hot stones' massage was wonderful and I left feeling like a new woman. My tight calves are no more.
